History of the association
Soierie Vivante was created thanks to the tenacity and the passion of a small group of people, craftspeople (such as Mrs. Létourneau and Mr. Mattelon, who were former weavers), historians, academics and Lyon textile professionals, inhabitants and municipal councillors. They created Soierie Vivante in order to preserve the Croix Rousse area’s richness and uniqueness.

Since 1994, Soierie Vivante has been entrusted by the City of Lyon with the management of the trimming workshop, located at 21 rue Richan. The association took part in getting Mr. Mattelon’s hand-weaving looms listed as “historic monument”. It also took part in having a totally exceptional Lyon damask weaving loom (fitted with Jacquard cards from 1830) restored. Finally, it has also contributed to the restoration of Mrs. Alauzet’s figured velvet workshop and of the Ressicaud--Jacquet mechanical weaving workshop.
However, the task to be accomplished remains huge and the association is constantly asked to get involved in various activities. |
Goals of tha association
SOIERIE VIVANTE was created in 1993 to safeguard and enhance the heritage of the silk trade in Lyon, and especially in the Croix Rousse area, which used to be a very active weaving community in the 19th century. In addition, the Croix-Rousse area has been listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.
THIS IS NOT JUST ANOTHER MUSEUM, but a journey through time, led by passionate guides, you will enter authentic family workshops and, even sometimes, meet the volunteers, who will help you learn about the equipment, which was used, and pass on their passion and their knowledge.
